Poly LibSearch - User guide: FAQs

(1) What is OneSearch?

OneSearch is a new search engine, also known as “web-scale discovery service”. It provides a Google-like search experience that allows users to search not just for library’s catalogue of books and media materials, but also journal articles, news, market reports and other e-resources subscribed by SP Library.

OneSearch harvests content from our library catalogue, subscribed e-resources and other repositories – even down to the chapter and article level – to create a centralized index. When users do a search, OneSearch dives into this index to match and find the information required. OneSearch covers most of the library resources. It is as comprehensive as it can be though some of the more specialized subject databases do not provide their content to be indexed by OneSearch.

(2) Why did SP Library implement OneSearch?

To simplify the search experience and make it easier to discover and access library resources for users. Instead of having to search different databases for comprehensive results, users can now do so with a single search. The search results retrieved include print books, e-books, journal articles, newspaper articles, market reports, case studies, library resource guides, online music recordings, DVDs, and much more!

(3) How will my search experience be different now?

As you type in the search box, OneSearch’s Autocomplete feature will provide you with suggestions.  For example, if you type “global” (or even just “glo”), the feature will suggest “global warming,” “globalization,” and “global financial crisis,” and other potentially useful search terms.

The results are now presented in a continuous scroll-down page, so no need to click ‘next page’ to see more.

When you hover over an item in the results list, more information and citation management tools will appear on the right-side.

OneSearch also helps you through your research process by providing definitions of common terms and suggesting related topics.

To provide an effective user experience, OneSearch uses responsive design technology to change the information displayed to suit the user’s screen size.

(4) I can’t seem to find the information I want using OneSearch. What can I do?

You can consult your School Librarian for assistance. They can advise you on your search strategy, as well as the specialized resources not covered in OneSearch.
