Educational Research: Action Research

What is Action Research?

"Action research is a form of investigation designed for use by teachers to attempt to solve problems and improve professional practices in their own classrooms. It involves systematic observations and data collection which can be then used by the practitioner-researcher in reflection, decision making and the development of more effective classroom strategies."

Parsons and Brown (2002)

Through action research into their own teaching and learning practices and situating this research in their own classroom settings, lecturers can learn about themselves, their students and their colleagues to change instruction that can impact students.

Stages of an Action Research Cycle

Action research involves a cyclical process with the aim of generating knowledge and learning from action. This cycle can be repeated as many times as needed until the desired change is achieved. Ferrance (2000) outlines 5 stages in an action research cycle.
